At Cawroots, we believe in being grounded, in nature, in culture, and in truth. Emancipation Day, marked on 1 August, invites us to pause and reflect. It's a moment to honour the strength and sacrifices of our ancestors and to celebrate the legacy they passed on. One of resilience, wisdom, and quiet pride.

As a Jamaican man and Founder of Cawroots, Emancipation Day touches something deep in me. I was raised in two very different parts of Jamaica, Uptown Kingston and Tivoli Gardens. That contrast shaped the man I became.

Our house sat at the foot of a hill, which is still our family home and a familiar place of comfort for whenever I visit Jamaica to this day. I remember being a child standing there, looking up toward the top, knowing that just beyond the curve lay a world full of possibility. There was something about that view, the way the hill stretched upwards, that made you believe life could be bigger than your circumstances. It gave me hope.

Tivoli Gardens, on the other hand, was a world of its own. Known by many as one of Kingston's most challenging areas, what some might call a ghetto or an estate in the UK. Tivoli showed me another side of life. It was raw, real and at times unforgiving. But it was also rich in community, in survival, in spirit. I learned how to hold my own, how to move with purpose and how to carry pride even when things weren't easy.

Though I've lived in the UK for nearly 25 years, more than half my life, my Jamaican accent remains strong as does my connection to my culture. I walk with it. I build with it and through Cawroots, I share it.

Our Wellness Was Never a Trend; It Was a Way of Life

Long before wellness was packaged and sold, our people were living it. My grandmother, mother and aunts didn't need fancy labels to know the power of the plants in the gardens that surrounded us. Wellness came from the land, from the things we grew and gathered and from a deep, quiet knowing that nature would care for us if we cared for her too.

At Cawroots, we carry that same spirit. Our Seamoss is full of minerals, drawn from the sea that shaped our islands. Our Moringa, known as the “miracle tree,” is a powerhouse for health and the Dog Blood Leaves, used for generations by Caribbean women, brings with it stories of healing, balance and care.

These aren't products, they're part of a legacy. A birthright. A remembering.

Cawroots; Where Culture and Care Meet

I didn't create Cawroots to follow a trend. I created it to honour my story. Everything we do, every herb we sell is done with intention. To help people reconnect to themselves, to their roots, and to the earth beneath their feet.

Wellbeing should feel familiar, not foreign. It should remind you of your grandparents, your childhood, your own inner wisdom. That's what we're here to do, to create a space where culture and care meet.

Emancipation Day; A Time to Honour, Reflect, and Reclaim

This Emancipation Day, take a moment for yourself. Whether it's through quiet reflection, joyful celebration, or intentional rest, know that you are part of something powerful. Brew something nourishing. Play the music that raised you. Call someone who knows your story. Honour your roots, and step boldly into your future.

Because true freedom isn't only about the past, it's how we live now, how we love ourselves, and how we pass on the wisdom we've inherited.

From all of us at Cawroots, we wish you a soulful and powerful Emancipation Day.

Stay Grounded. Stay Nourished. Stay Rooted.
